WEARING THE SHOES OF CHRIST
“When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” Matthew 9:36(NIV)
Empathy is the ability to momentarily step into another person’s world, seeing life through their eyes, their hearts, their feelings, their pain, struggles, and hopes. It is akin to the adage “wearing someone’s shoes,” seeking to understand another person’s feelings and experiences from their perspective.
Biblically, this reflects the spirit of: “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” Romans 12:15, which is perfectly demonstrated in the Divine nature of Christ, who continually showed compassion to those in need (Matthew 9:36). When He saw the crowds, “he had compassion on them” (Matthew 9:36), responding to their deep spiritual and human needs with love and care. True empathy moves us beyond mere sympathy into compassionate action, enabling us to become instruments of comfort and healing in a hurting world. We also see Christ’s tender heart at the tomb of Lazarus, where “Jesus wept” (John 11:35), reminding us that God is touched by our grief. His compassion reached the rejected and the needy. “Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man” (Mark 1:41), showing that empathy expresses itself through loving action.
As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect this same spirit of compassion in our daily lives. We are called to feel the pain of others, carry each other’s burden, respond to needs with Christ-like compassion, and become instruments of His love in the world. In this way we will fulfill the law of Christ, and become an expression of His love.
May our hearts be open to feel, ready to support, and willing to bring comfort to others. ✨🕊️
