One in Christ: A Call to Unity of Purpose

Jun 9, 2026

"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Eph.4:1-6.NIV

In Ephesians 4:1–6, Paul calls believers to live lives worthy of their calling by demonstrating humility, gentleness, patience, and love. He calls us to "be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love." Yet humility and patience are often misunderstood.

Humility is not weakness, nor is patience stagnation; Being humble does not mean allowing people to walk over you. True humility is not weakness; it is strength under God's control. It is knowing who you are in Christ, valuing others, and serving without arrogance, while still maintaining healthy boundaries and standing for what is right. Likewise, patience does not mean remaining inactive, tolerating dysfunction indefinitely, or refusing to innovate. Patience allows us to pursue progress without becoming reckless, and to embrace change without abandoning love and grace. Both humility and patience enables us to relate wisely and graciously to others while continuing to grow and move forward in God's purpose.

As Christians, we are urged to make every effort with singleness of purpose and intentional commitment, to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. The persuit of peace requires intentional effort, mutual respect, and a commitment to unite in purpose. We may not always agree on everything, but we are called to protect the bond that holds us together in Christ. It demands diligence, sacrifice, and a willingness to set aside distractions, personal agendas, and competing interests, above personal preferences, in order to pursue what truly matters.

We must make an intentional effort to be proactive in pursuing peace, resolving conflicts, extending grace, and strengthening relationships. Unity is God's gift, but preserving it is our shared responsibility.

As people of God in Christ, we are the pillars of Christian unity, built on one foundation which is Christ Jesus. Though we come from different backgrounds and have different gifting and graces, we belong to one body, are guided by one Spirit, share one hope, follow one Lord, hold one faith, and worship one God and Father.

Our unity is grounded in the truth that there is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. Because we share the same spiritual foundation, let us strive to live, serve, and journey together in harmony for the glory of God.
